About Ios Ios, the capital, is almost in the center of the west side of the island, 2km from the harbour. It spreads around a hill with a superb view of Ormos. On the top of the hill are preserved the ruins of a 14th c. Venetian castle. The huge beach Mylopota, with its fine golden sand, lies 3 km south of Chora. At Plakotos, near the northern promontory of Karatza, have been found ancients tombs. In the same area are remains of a Hellenic tower called Psaropyrgos. At the south end is the beach of Maganari, one of the finest on Ios.
